Dawei, formerly Tavoy, the capital of Tanintharyi

Dawei is the capital city of Tanintharyi Region. Formerly known as Tavoy in the colonial times, Dawei is a port city with quaint colonial architecture. It is known these days for a new Special Economic Zone that is being developed, with a new modern port infrastructure. Since it is situated between the sea and the mountains, Dawei has an extreme tropical monsoon season. Meteorologists estimate that it is probably one of the wettest lowland tropical regions in the world.

What to see near Dawei

Maungmagan Beach

Dawei is very close to Myanmar’s many undeveloped beaches. The most famous of which is Maungmagan (also spelled Maung Ma Kan), meaning ‘where the concubines bathe’. Legend has it that the King Alaung Si Thu and his entourage spent a considerable time at this place, on the way to invade Thailand. Maungmagan is located 12 kilometres from Dawei. There are some guest houses and resorts nearby.

The Most Secluded Beaches in Myanmar

In the dry season, between November and April, Dawei is a great place for those who want to explore beaches. The best way is to rent a motorbike taxi and rely on local knowledge. There are many beaches such as Grandfather Beach, Tizit Beach, San Mari Beach, and Paradise Beach that you can discover. These beaches do not have the heavy footfall of their counterparts in the north such as Chaungtha and Ngwe Saung, or Napali as they are not yet developed. You might find a beer station or two nearby but be prepared to not find anything at all nearby.

Visit the Myawyit Pagoda

A visit to a new town is not complete without visiting its pagodas. Myawyit Pagoda is located right at the edge of the water, 10 kilometres from Maungmagan beach. It is a must-see site if you are in the neighborhood as the pagoda is built on to of a hill in the middle of the sea. You will literally be in the Andaman Sea, while on land!  You can either rent a taxi, a tuk tuk, or a motorbike taxi to get there. Once you get there, you’ll have to cross a concrete bridge on foot to get to the small hill that the pagoda was established.

FMI Air is one of the few airlines that fly down south to Tavoy or Dawei. We hope we can be part of your journey in discovering Myanmar.
